I learned about DEFCON earlier this year in March when I transitioned from a TPM on Infrastructure Engineering to Information Security from a coworker. She advised that I go check out some women in security groups to learn more about the security landscape. Originally, I had planned on competing in the social engineering CTF, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to afford the trip to Vegas on my own so didn't sign up in time. I'm hopeful that I will have the opportunity to participate in a CTF next year!
I am happy to announce that I've been selected by WISP to receive a scholarship this year and am super stoked to go! WISP (Women in Information Security and Privacy) is an org that provides a variety of support to women (and those that identify as women) in infosec. With this scholarship, I'll also have the opportunity to attend The Diana Initiative which is a smaller conference happening at the same time as DEFCON! I do know a few peers that will be presenting so I look forward to turning into a sponge and absorb as much information as I can through osmosis by being present and asking questions.
No formal schedule has been nailed down yet, but I've been highly encouraged to spend time in the different villages and ask questions. I definitely plan on writing about my experience there, taking lots of photos and notes, and meeting fellow WISP and Diana Initiative speakers!
